General Information

A.   Change in Your Child's Daily Schedule

Activities are planned and materials prepared before the start of the school day.  Therefore, it is helpful for the teachers to know if your child is coming to school.  Please call the school if your child is sick or taking the day off.  Also, the staff needs to know if your child will be leaving school at a different time than scheduled.  It is extremely important that you notify the staff of any change in parent's address, phone, or place of employment.  Moscow Day School is open from 7:30 A.M. - 5:30 P.M., Monday thru Friday.

B.   Parent Messages and Child's Cubby

We leave messages in your child's cubby and on the second set of doors leading into the school.  Be sure to check the doors and your child's cubby everyday.  Around the first of the month, we will distribute monthly calendars and tuition bill statements into your child's cubby.  The teacher in your child's classroom will have your child's specific classroom daily activities listed by the door.  Please read this everyday so you know what your child's activities were.  If your child takes a quiet time at school please check the board by the cubbies to see the amount of time your child slept for the day.

C.    Separation

It is common for young children to be concerned about leaving their parents.  Your child may be anxious about leaving you when coming to school.  Sometimes this appears on the first day, sometimes it appears later, and sometimes it does not happen at all.  It could be comforting to your child to keep an item belonging to their parents with them for security and assurance that their parent will return.  Pictures from home are also helpful to relax the child.  Children like to know where you will be and what you will be doing while they are at school.  We want to work with you to help your child make a happy and smooth transition.

Each child in school is assigned a primary caregiver.  The primary caregiver system ensures that every child has a special person who becomes an expert, advocate, and coordinator for your child.  Primary does not mean exclusive.  All staff member develop warm relationships with all children.

D.   Birthdays

Birthdays are an important day for everyone at Moscow Day School.  We want to celebrate everyone's birthday, even if it comes on a no school day.  When it is your child's birthday, he or she can bring in pictures of when they were born, at one year, two years, three years, and so on.  A birthday poster can be made with these pictures and kept at the school for a few days.  You may also bring a snack or arrange other activities to do.  Please do not pass out birthday party invitations at school.  We know that all of the children can't be invited and we want to protect everyone's feelings.

E.   Medication Taken at School

The staff will give your child medications at school if required.  The medication must come to school with specific written instructions including a parents written signature.  A parent's signature must also be on the special permission form as well.  The parent must hand-deliver the medication to a teacher.  Please do not put any medication in your child's lunchbox or cubby.  All prescription medications should be in their original containers, labeled with the child's first and last name, name of the medicine, date filled, expiration date, amount, and frequency to be given.  Parents will provide a medicine dropper with the child's name on it for sanitation purposes.  The dropper will be washed after each use and not shared with any other child.

F.   Field Trips

We will try to have at least one driving field trip each month.  We need parent participation to help us transport the children.  Please provide proof of car insurance to the director.  Field trip notifications will be posted on the second set of doors coming into the school.  Sign up sheets and specific information will be available.  If needed, please provide a safety child seat, labeled with your child's name.  Every child under the age of 4 or under the weight of 40 pounds must be in a car seat (booster seat recommended).  Please provide a locking clip if needed.

G.   Sharing Days

Sharing is a special time for you child.  He or she is allowed to share anything they with (excluding weapons).  We especially enjoy science projects, themes/letter of the week items, and animals.  They may share one item once a week on any day of their choosing.  However, there is no sharing on library or field trip days.  Please label and put their sharing in a non-see-through bag and put it in the sharing basket, which will be in front of the bulletin board in your child's classroom.  When it is your child's turn to share, he or she will give three clues, if possible, about his or her sharing.  Then, the other children will try to guess what your child brought for sharing.  If after three guesses no one has guessed correctly, your child will show the item.  The other children will be able to ask questions about the sharing.  Sharing is often the most exciting part of the day for the children and we invite you to stay and watch.  Please remember no toys from home are allowed, unless your child brings it to share.

H.   Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences are planned in November and May.  We hope you will participate in these.  Please feel free at any time to make an appointment if you would like to discuss your child with his or her teachers.

I.   Parents and Visitors at School

You should always feel welcome to join your child at school.  There is a possibility the teachers will not be able to talk with you during the school day, but you can still enjoy spending time with your child.  It is also a special treat for your child to have a parent come to school and eat lunch with him or her.  Lunch is from 11:45 A.M. to 12:15 P.M.  Grandparents, friends, and other special people are also welcome to visit.

J.   Snacks and Lunch Time as School

Snacks are provided to the children around 9:45 am and 3:15pm.  Typically, our snacks include the following:  Water, Juice, or Milk; Fruits and/or Vegetables; Crackers or Breads; Cheese or Yogurt; and Peanut Butter, Nuts, Meats, Beans, etc.

Each child brings their own cold lunch to school.  Please provide an ice pack in your child's lunch to keep items cold.  We provide 1% Mild and water.  We are not allowed to reheat food items for health reasons.  The child will decide what they eat, how much, and in which order.  You, in making their lunches have decided to what and how much is offered.

Please beware of the top 10 foods children under the age of 4 are mostly likely to choke on.  If you do provide your child with these foods, please try to cut them into small pieces.  For example, cut grapes in half or make thin sticks out of carrots.  Thank you for helping us in trying our best to make everyone safe.

K.   Clothing

Your child is here to play and have fun.  Please send your child in clothes that are o.k. to get dirty.  A major part of our program focuses on self-help skills.  We ask that you try to dress your child in appropriate clothing so they can dress and undress themselves.  Trouble items might include belts, overalls, and snaps.

We are involved in outside play everyday, unless it is pouring rain or below freezing.  Please send the appropriate clothing for each kind of weather.

Winter Weather Clothing:  During the winter we love to play in the snow.  Please supply your child everyday with outside clothing.  Include a heavy coat, snow pants, boots, hat, and mittens.  Label everything!!

L.   Nap or Quiet Time

All children are not required to take a nap.  Please notify a teacher if you would like your child to nap everyday or occasionally.  The school provides a napping cot and parents must provide their child's blanket and pillow.  The blanket and pillow must be taken home every Friday and returned clean on Monday.  Each child will be allowed to sleep however long he or she wishes, unless otherwise stated by a parent.  Please check the white board (located by the cubbies in the preschool room) to see if or how long your child slept for that day.

M.   Toileting

Children need to be fully potty trained to attend Moscow Day School.  We do not allow pull-up diapers for any reason; please do not bring them to school.

If a child needs assistance in wiping himself/herself after toileting, the teachers will verbally coach the child through the necessary steps to help build the child's self-help skills.

N.   Procedures for Arrival/Departure of Children

For your child's safety, the sign in and out procedures have been established.  Parents must sign the attendance register when bringing children to school and when picking them up.  Parents need to sign their full name and time in and out.  The school is not responsible for children dropped off and not signed in.  Only people (age 18 or older) whose name appear on the special permission form as authorized to pick up your child will be allowed to sign the child in and out.  Children are not permitted to sign themselves in or out.  Our staff will ask for verification of identity if needed before releasing a child.

O.   Bus Rider Requirements: Kindergarten Children

Parents of children who attend morning kindergarten and ride the bus to school for the afternoon program are REQUIRED to call Moscow Day School (882-8426) on any day when your child will NOT be riding the bus to the school from kindergarten.  School staff will immediately try to locate your child who normally rides the bus and does not show up.  Children occasionally miss the bus or decide to go home alone, so it is most urgent that parents notify the school when their child will not be attending.

P.   Weather Closures

Moscow Day School does not close when Moscow School District closes for snow days.  The school will close if there is a town emergency or any other uncontrolled situation occurs.

Q.   Emergency Evacuation and Fire Drills

The children and teachers are required to conduct fire drills once a month.  At any sign of fire, including smoke, intense heat, flames or smoke alarm notice.  We evacuate the building and walk the children out to the sidewalk in a calm and orderly fashion.  We do role call and account for each child.

S.   Discipline

Discipline is a process by which adults help children learn to control his or her own actions and decisions.  Our goal is to help the child develop control from within, rather than depending on outside control from adults. The development of social skills including emotional control, coping or delay of gratification, appropriate self-expression, problem solving and decision-making are important learning tasks for children.

The staff at Moscow Day School will facilitate learning through guidance that is related to the specific behavior and appropriate to each child's needs and development.

We believe in positive reinforcement.  We will strive to increase good feelings.

Staff members will be expected to remain calm but firm in correcting behavior.  The child will be expected to learn individual responsibility for his or her behavior and accept the consequences.

T.   Child Abuse Reporting Requirements

Our staff is required by law to report immediately to the local law enforcement agency or Child Protective Services any instance where there is reason to suspect physical, sexual, or emotional abuse of a child, as well as neglect or child exploitation.

We may notify parents when the police or Child Protective Services are called about possible abuse, neglect, or exploitation, except on the recommendation of CPS or the police.
